The National Society of Professional Surveyors is the recognized national face of the surveying profession in the United States and its territories. Membership in NSPS is open to all professional surveyors and to persons trained, licensed, or interested in the profession of surveying and mapping. One can be part of the NSPS family through the affiliated state surveying and mapping societies. There are also student, associate, and sustaining members throughout the country, and strong liaisons exist with sister organizations in the geospatial and engineering communities.

NSPS sponsors many strong programs. There are certification boards for Survey Technicians, Hydrographic Surveyors, and Flood Plain Surveyors and various contests for the youth. A student surveying contest held each spring in conjunction with the annual meeting of NSPS brings together students from surveying/ geomatics college and university programs to compete in a predefined surveying project, meet their peers, and become familiar with the many facets of professional surveying and mapping. Papers written as part of the contest are published in Surveying and Land Information Science, the society's academic journal. The Trig-Star program takes math contests to high schools all across the country, focusing attention on various rewarding careers in surveying. NSPS also has an active group dedicated to working with the Boy Scouts of America and other youth groups to educate youngsters about the profession. Members compete in an annual map/plat contest, and many awards are given for excellence in the profession.

NSPS is a strong proponent of higher education. NSPS members participate as accreditation evaluators for surveying and geomatics programs in the U.S. The possibility of providing on-line continuing education programs for members is being investigated.
