John M. Palatiello, President and Owner of John M. Palatiello & Associates, Inc., a public affairs consulting firm based in Reston, VA, has been appointed by Governor Bob McDonnell to the Virginia Geographic Information Network (VGIN) Advisory Board. The VGIN advisory board advises the Virginia Information Technologies Agency on issues related to surveying, mapping, geographic information systems (GIS) and broader geospatial technologies.

"I am honored to be appointed by Governor McDonnell and to have the privilege to serve the geospatial profession in this position," said Palatiello.

Palatiello was sworn into the position, as required by Virginia law, by the Honorable John Frey, Fairfax Circuit Court Clerk during a private ceremony held September 5.

Palatiello previously served on an advisory committee to the Virginia General Assembly to create the Virginia Geographic Information Network (VGIN) and was a member of a study committee on licensing of Photogrammetrists that made recommendations to the Virginia Board of Architects, Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, Certified Interior Designers and Landscape Architects (APELSCIDLA).

As President of JMP&A, Palatiello serves as Executive Director for MAPPS, the national association of private sector geospatial firms; government affairs consultant to the National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS); and administrator for the Council on Federal Procurement of Architecture and Engineering Services (COFPAES). In 2008, Palatiello was appointed by Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne as a member of the National Geospatial Advisory Committee (NGAC), a federal advisory committee sponsored by the Department of the Interior, where he served one term.

Palatiello was a nine year member of the Fairfax County Planning Commission serving the Hunter Mill District until 2001. He has been a resident of Virginia for over thirty years.
