New Report Highlights Concerns Regarding Landsat

The report, titled Landsat and Beyond: Sustaining and Enhancing the Nation's Land Imaging Program, was authored by Committee on Implementation of a Sustained Land Imaging Program; Space Studies Board; Division on Engineering and Physical Sciences; National Research Council. It is available free in electronic form from the National Academies Press and is in pre-publication.

The authors note that while the U.S. pioneered land imaging, other countries are now ahead of us. Futher, "the economic, intrinsic, and scientific benefits to the United States of Landsat imagery far exceed the investment in the system."

The main recommendation is the establishment of a sustained land imaging program enabled by an overarching national strategy and long-term commitment, with defined program requirements, management responsibilities, and persistent funding.
