RIEGL instruments are used to survey the world from beneath the sea to the tops of mountains and into space. We are proud to announce that there have been four new, innovative systems added to the RIEGL family of Airborne LIDAR Systems that further increase the range of applications. The new laser scanners introduced include the versatile, high-altitude LMS-Q780, the lightweight bathymetric VQ-820-GU, the high performance corridor mapping VQ-480i, and the lightweight topographic VQ-480U for emerging UAV applications into the established RIEGL Airborne Laser System family. The RIEGL Airborne Laser Scanners provides our users with the confidence of the latest state-of-the-art technology, more accurate and complete data and a high return on investment.

The attributes of the RIEGL LIDAR engine are optimized to provide the user with the best tools in the industry for their applications. The importance of the features that RIEGL has implemented in the hardware and software of the airborne systems is that the user will have the most comprehensive system that provides the highest-quality and most precise data because that’s what matters.

The RIEGL smart waveform analysis provides the most comprehensive LIDAR data of cities. The multi-target resolution means that the complex surfaces of the buildings are discovered. The surfaces always feature many material types, a variety of angles and a difficult mapping environment. The smart waveform analysis provides superior point cloud information to facilitate fast feature extraction. RIEGL systems are equipped with Multiple-Time-Around (MTA) capability, which resolves range ambiguity between laser pulses that allows the user to fly at a steady altitude while capturing ruggedness of terrain. MTA also allows the resolving of up to 14 laser pulses in the air, which provides more captured points on the ground. RIEGL calibrated amplitude and reflectance of the gathered point cloud provides the most complete, real-time information to the user. A precise time stamp is provided to every echo pulse return, which gives the user more accurate data. Pulse shape deviation of the RIEGL Airborne scanners allows for superior filtering of data; the elimination of background noise of the point cloud, and cleaner, crisp data delivered to the user.

The systems are also all designed to be lightweight with small form factor, use low power consumption, and are ruggedized. This allows our sensors to be installed on virtually any airborne platform such as balloons, blimps, helicopters, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV’S), drones, and fixed wing aircraft of all types. Each system is complimented by an industry leading software suite for data acquisition and data processing, which provides fast, high-quality data to the user.

The spatial technology business environment demands higher accuracy, higher spatial density, and high efficiency. With this in mind, RIEGL has introduced the new versatile, high-altitude laser system; the RIEGL LMS-Q780.   The LMS-Q780 is an upgrade on the success of the RIEGL LMS-Q680i. The ranging capability of the system was further increased to benefit our users. Besides the long-range capability, the MTA of the scanner allows this system to retain a high Pulse Repetition Rate (PRR) with up to 14 pulses in the air with the range ambiguity automatically resolved. This is groundbreaking because not only does this system present higher ground coverage, which reduces acquisition time and cost, but it also provides higher point density, making this system the most efficient tool for wide area mapping, urban mapping, mapping of lakesides and river banks, topography, mining, forests, and many other applications.

The demand for corridor mapping has also been growing. Airborne LIDAR Scanning has provided new and effective ways to survey markets such as electrical transmission lines, road infrastructure, shoreline mapping, and pipeline mapping. The RIEGL VQ-480i with a high PRR, a wide field of view and online waveform capability is the ultimate tool for corridor mapping. Corridor mapping is made more time and cost-efficient by the rapid data capture, the wide field of view, and multi-target capability of the VQ-480i. The high-accuracy ranging that provides better, real-time information to the user is a unique feature in the airborne market. The VQ-480i features 16bit calibrated intensity that also provides the complete, real-time information that users need.

The lightweight topographic RIEGL VQ-480U has been specifically developed for usage in unmanned aerial vehicles. This system has been made lighter and more compact with a scanner weight of 16.5 pounds, mountable in any orientation and in limited space conditions. These differences make the scanner perfect for mounting on motorized hang-gliders, gyrocopters, ultra-light aircraft, and UAV’s. By integrating the VQ-480U with an unmanned aerial vehicle, it is possible to monitor potentially dangerous areas inaccessible by humans.

The lightweight bathymetric RIEGL VQ-820-GU is an award-winning Airborne Laser Scanner capable of capturing combined topographic and hydrographic data for capturing coastlines, the mapping of riverbanks and the mapping of lakesides similar to that of the VQ-820-G scanner that is already present in the RIEGL Airborne family. The scanner capturing combined topographic and bathymetric data allows users the opportunity to use the scanner for applications such as monitoring coastlines, shore degradation, shallow water mapping, flood prevention, and habitat mapping for both short-term and long-term monitoring with the most accurate and most complete data provided.

The addition of the VQ-820-GU to the RIEGL airborne family has allowed the scanner to be integrated into an unmanned aerial vehicle through the construction of a lighter unit. This lightweight scanner allows for the unit to be installed and flown on any aircraft. The successful integration of the VQ-820-GU with the Schiebel CAMCOPTER® S-100 Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) has opened the door for a new and innovative solution for combined topographic and bathymetric airborne scanning in areas normally not able to be captured by manned aerial vehicles.

The introduction of the LMS-Q780, the VQ-820-GU, VQ-480i, and VQ-480U into the established RIEGL Airborne Laser Scanner family further shows RIEGL’s dedication to delivering reliability and proven innovations in 3D to our users.
