The Veterans Memorial Tollway (I-355), in Northeastern Illinois, is a six-lane, 30-mile highway connecting I-290 and I-80. Construction of the 12.5 mile, I-355 South Extension alleviated impacts of soaring traffic volumes in one of the fastest growing areas of the country.

Illinois Tollway Multiple Services at Valley International Airport, Harlingen, Texas
AeroMetric had the privilege to serve the Illinois Tollway throughout the I-355 extension project, from conception through to the close of the construction cycle. We provided large scale mapping of pre-construction conditions including existing bridges, interchanges, and toll facilities. Our mapping solution included a carefully-planned mix of deliverables, including digital imagery, orthophotography, lidar data, and digital elevation models, and both planimetric and topographic mapping. During construction, we provided progress updates at key milestones. Upon completion, we produced detailed as-builts, integrating both aerial and ground surveys.
In addition, AeroMetric provided the Tollway with a Geospatial Project Catalog, to organize andaccess the multitude of mapping documents produced during the project. This catalog incorporates geospatial metadata and attribution with document management technologies into a central GIS database. The Catalog has become a valuable operational tool that allows all authorized Tollway users to easily discover and access any delivered dataset, at any given location, throughout the project area.

Valley International Airport
Founded in 1941 as a military airbase, this 3-runway airport supports flights by Southwest Airlines, Continental Airlines and other carriers. It is located west of the Gulf of Mexico, and immediately north of the Mexican border and handles an annual load of nearly 800,000 passengers. AeroMetric acquired aerial photography to be used for planimetric and topographic mapping, obstruction analysis, and orthophotography. Detailed mapping, features and attributes were collected as required by the FAA Advisory Circular 150/5300-17A and 18B. Orthophotography with a one-foot-pixel resolution for the obstruction area and a 0.25-foot pixel resolution for the entire airport property were included as part of the deliverables.
Climate Change Studies at Mt. Wrangell, Alaska
I began glaciological research at the summit of Mt. Wrangell in 1961. Our work included observations of the volcanic heat flow on snow ridges, but after the 1964 earthquake, studying the effects of volcanic heat took priority. It soon became clear that aerial photogrammetry was the only way to observe the entire 35 km2 summit area. I contacted Tony Follett, of AeroMetric, and we proceeded to mark our glacier movement survey points so they could also serve as air photo control points. We focused on the most rapid changes in the North Crater, the largest crater along the rim of the Summit Caldera. We followed the changes year by year from 1972 to present and used the original USGS photos from 1957 as a base.”

Mt. Wrangell, a massive 14,163-foot shield volcano in south-central Alaska, has undergone marked changes since the Great Earthquake in 1964, and aerial photogrammetry has played a significant role in monitoring those changes. AeroMetric has been supporting the team studying the mountain and its glaciers for at least 25 of the past 35 years—providing aerial photography, mapping, orthophotography, and volumetric studies. As a result, Mt. Wrangell is probably one of the best studied volcanic-glacial systems in the world. In 2010, AeroMetric provided localized planimetric maps of a summit glacier, plus several 3D vectors showing movement of identifiable features on the glacier surface using controlled 2005 and 2006 aerial photos.
