Sure! I know nothing about it but if it could help put my RTK GPS equipment to work I'm game.
I'm sure your talking about machine and aerial spray control correct?

| Well, that certainly is a germane topic under Precision Ag. So let's kick it around.

| Nobody else has taken this bait so far. So I am assuming, Tom that you are involved somehow in spray control. That is a narrower scope of the application. I was thinking more along the line of positional and temporal accuracy and precision. Put the seed and the chemicals in the right place at the right time at the correct population and doseage. That was where I was basically going, and it seems that survey technology might have some answers, and if not answers, some interest in finding them.

Some local rice farmers use lasers and equipment grading systems to grade their fields for drainage. I've never been involved with any of this work, but there has to be some data collected before the work is performed to determine the favorable drainage pattern and the minimum manipulation of the soil to maximize production of this task.
I'd think the initial data collection and topographical information would give a surveyor a work source. With this information, the farmer could have accurate yield information and save money in the long run.

| We ran a feature story on precision agriculture in March 2007 by NavCom and John Deere and some of us on the staff questioned how much relevance it had for surveyors. I find it similar to machine control in that farmers can now "survey" their land in carrying out their operations using their onboard GPS receiver, much like contractors can do it on their earthmoving machines. But there's still a role, niche, or even a business opportunity for surveyors in there somewhere, perhaps if nothing else but establishing and overseeing control. Somebody pointed out that this would have greater ramifications in the Midwest, where the farms are massive. -- Tom Gibson, PSM editor |
