This is for my homework. We are doing curve data right now. I was given 5 curves and only given bits and peices of info and I am to find out all other data. I have all curve data for curves 1,2, and 5. On curve 3 I am only given long chord and external secant. I know the formulas for long chord and external secant but I need a formula that has C and E and will give me delta or radius. Does anyone know the formula? I have also watched my teacher combine formulas by dividing them into one another but when I do it it doenst work out. Thanx so much for any inputs!

Hi Amberftw, wow it has been a long time since I have used the formulas. I had them all written down on a crust old piece of parchment that I would carry before calculators went programable!! But good news! just look in the back of any field book and you will find the curve and reduction tables!! Dont have a blank field book? Go get one ASAP at any local survey shop. They are only a few bucks and are worth every penny for a student.....Tom

Post what you have on the "Problem Corner" below and we'll see if we can help you.

Or e-mail them to me:DLLindell@msn.com.  I won't solve them, but I'll tell you how.

DEGREE OF CURVE= 5729.58/R
TANGENT=RTAN(I/2) :I= INTERSECTION ANGLE BETWEEN TANGENT
L=R*I*PI/180           :PI=3.1416
LC=2*R*SIN(I/2)
M=R{1-COS(I/2)}
E=R{1/COS(I/2)-1}

GOOD LUCK

Sorry it took so long! I finally called my teacher and the way it was worded I thought he was talking about the external cecant but it was the tangent so after that it was a breeze. And if anyone else can use it I will post the curve data formulas. Also easy to derive from a sketch. Can show you how to do that but you would have to e-mail me from them norton_amber@live.com.

L= delta/360 * (2)(pie)(R)
T= (R) tan(delta/2)
C=2R sin(delta/2)
M=r (1-cos(delta/2))
E= r(1/cos(delta/2)-1)
DsubA also Degree of curve by Arc definition= 18000/(pie)R
DsubC also Degree of curve by Chord definition= 2 Arcsin(50/R)
Dsubf=DsubA/200=90/pieR=delta/2L
