We are trying to download to a PC(XP Pro) the stored data in our Sokkia 530R3 using an aftermarket download cable that we purchased. The cable has the 9-pin Hirose(?) connector for the 530R3 and a USB connector for the PC. We installed the driver supplied with the cable and we downloaded Prolink 1.15 from the Sokkia website. We have not been able to download with this configuration. However, we can successfully download and upload using a Hirose/serial port cable that apparently came with the 530R3. The problem with using the serial port cable is that the two PC's we need to use for downloading have serial port issues and that serial ports on PC's are becoming obsolete. Sokkia has a USB cable for $100 that they claim will work, but we would like to be able to use our $30 aftermarket USB cable. The supplier of the aftermarket cable says he has sold many of these cables to satisfied customers and is willing to let us return the cable if it will not work for us.

I also have questions about storing our surveying data in the 530R3 as opposed to using a data collector. We have liked and used a Sokkia SDR33 for many years, but recently lost it. We are attempting to use the 530R3 storage features, but are having some difficulties. Thus far, the most important feature that is lacking in the 530R3 involves retracing an existing survey line from station to station. The 530R3 provides an azimuth from station to station, but apparently cannot provide the distance from station to station. The lack of this info is very time-consuming because of the trial/error approach required. Should we just give up on using the 530R3 for our data storage? Used SDR33's are available for a few hundred $, but downloading from them is also an issue. We have been told by some that it is possible to download from SDR33-to-USB vs SDR33-to-serial, but others have said that none of their attempts were successful. Can anyone help?
