Page 64 of the February issue describes the new problem corner challenge.  If you have answers for both problems #178 and #179 email them to Ashley, and then post under this topic:
  • your name,
  • the state where you live,
  • that you think you're a contender.
The first three readers to send Ashley correct solutions to both problems (one from each area of the U.S., roughly) will get their names printed here and in the magazine.

Once we have winners we'll post the correct answers here so you can discuss them as well as in the problem corner link.

Good luck!

Duggil, this is the first time we've run a contest involving the new forum, so it was a trail-run, so to speak.  The winners sent in the correct answers first, which was the main criterion; we didn't emphasize posting to the forum as an absolute necessity.  We will next time though because we'd like to get discussions going here about the problems (many discussion happen through email only).

If you'd like to challenge Ashley's choice of winners, please email her at ashley@profsurv.com; I'm sure she'd be happy to talk with you about it.

Everyone, we have a slight delay in the contest final decisions; Ashley gave birth to a baby boy on Sunday.  She's still emailing me about the problem corner contest, but I am encouraging her to leave the computer alone for a bit.  :)  Updates to follow - thanks for your patience.

Duggil, Ashley reports (from the hospital, see note above), "some of the submitters were not familiar with using online forum discussions because some asked me for advice and were confused about accessing the forum." Because we hadn't made posting to the forum an absolute requirement, for this first contest she picked the first people to email her the correct answers.

I would like to include the forum in this contest, so if you have any ideas on how to do so (other than making posting here one of the requirements to winning) I'm all ears.  I think next month we'll make posting here a requirement, however.
