Your very interesting story raises the point that these old maps provide both historical and ecological resources. Nineteenth century Coast Survey charts based on secondary triangulation done with plane table and chain provide detailed descriptions of local topography, settlements, and agricultural patterns, as well as a snapshot of the ever evolving coastal terrain. You can imagine yourself set down on the coast in 1850 and then take a look at the changes over 150 years. I think that the Washington markers must have been like a taste of time travel!
