The drones are coming.
Americans have learned about unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) primarily from overseas military conflicts. The result: wariness about invasion of privacy, warrantless surveillance by law enforcement agencies, and serious doubts about civil applications at home.
These concerns overlook the many benefits that unmanned aerial systems (UAS) can provide, such as monitoring traffic flow, the environment, and remote industrial operations, enhancing search and rescue capabilities, and agricultural uses.
In any case, UAS technologies and equipment are about to enter daily life. Under federal legislation passed last year, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is working against a 2015 deadline to develop rules that would allow wider use of UAVs in the National Air Space.
